Horst Mandl
The decathlete
At the age of 24, Horst was a "late starter" in athletics.
In 1965 he improved the Austrian record in the decathlon for the first time and only 3 years later he qualified for the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.
He celebrated his greatest success with the 6th place at the European Championships in Athens.
Until the age of 66, Horst remained active in the Masters and won many international medals.
Horst in conversation with his athlete Heimo Kaspar:
When my athletes start up, I jump into the air in the stands as if I were at the start myself and hope they only have half as much aching muscles as I do the next day.
The coach- and so much more
Parallel to his active Masters career, Horst passed on his knowledge as a trainer to the younger generation.
During his time as a coach, his athletes achieved over 200 Austrian championship titles.
For a long time he was national coach for Austrian athletics and coached many top athletes such as his son Jürgen, Thomas Tebbich, Klaus Ambrosch and Otto Petrovic.
The two javelin throwers Elisabeth Pauer and Elisabeth Eberl also started their careers under Horst's wing.

I'll never forget his reaction the first (and last) time he saw me throw a javelin. Nobody has ever shown me in such a charming way that I have absolutely no talent for it.
